George Fleet gained a Ph D at Cambridge with Ian Fleming on heterocyclic analogues of benzyne. He worked as a Medical Research Council fellow with Jeremy Knowles and Rodney Porter [Nobel prize winner] on the first examples of azide photoaffinity labeling, applied to antibody active sites. He was a postdoc with EJ Corey [Nobel prize winner] on the synthesis of prostaglandins and chromium(VI) oxidizing agents. He has worked at Oxford on sugar mimics of monosaccharides since 1982, with interests on iminosugars, nucleosides, sugar amino acids and their use as peptidomimetics and the synthesis of rare and novel monosaccharides by biotechnological environmentally friendly techniques. He was awarded the Pfizer award for organic synthesis in 1984 and 1985, Royal Society of Chemistry Bader Award for Organic Synthesis in 1995, the Royal Society of Chemistry Haworth Medal in 1999 and was the Roche lecturer at University of Colorado in 2000. He has published over 500 papers with more than 50 different academic institutions.
